Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

We focus on hiring for potential at the BBC, so the main requirement for the position is a strong software engineering skillset.  We want to hear from skilled engineers and technical experts from all industries.

  • Demonstrate expertise in full stack development and leadership, with a focus on data-driven technologies.
  • Take a structured and professional approach to engineering, ensuring high-quality development.
  • Build polished and beautiful products, emphasizing attention to detail.
  • Conduct rigorous testing and collaborate with Test Engineers for continuous improvement.
  • Mentor junior engineers, promote a culture of learning, and stay up to date with new technologies, particularly in data-driven domains.
  • Contribute to high-level architecture and integrations, leveraging data-driven technologies.
  • Collaborate with leadership to build and nurture the engineering community.
  • Foster relationships with local engineering networks for a sustainable talent pipeline and team scalability.
  • Remain hands-on in coding while supporting less experienced engineers.
  • Drive the ambition to build an outstanding engineering team and culture.
  • Conduct code reviews, maintain coding standards, and guidelines.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define and implement requirements.
  • Dedicated to growing the Tech Hub, and eager to engage with the North-East tech community.

You will play a key role in driving our ambition to build an outstanding software engineering team, environment, and culture.  We are looking for a Software Engineer in Test to join our tech community to drive this transformation, build a modern digital ecosystem using exciting technologies and do the best work of their careers.

• Develop effective software that meets given specifications.

• Review and give feedback on others’ code.

• Write tests using automated test-driven techniques for ensure code quality.

• Integrate the software with monitoring and support tools.

• Support system integration in its operating environment.

• Write and review technical documentation.

• Help troubleshoot and resolve issues throughout the product life cycle, including out of hours support for incident resolution.

• Participate in the team's agile planning and delivery process.

• Participate in the team’s software development methodologies, such as pairing, code and documentation reviewing, and continuous delivery.

• Learn new technologies and keep informed of existing technologies.

Our Tech Stack

The teams have the autonomy to choose the appropriate tools. Below are key tools/technologies that we currently use in our team:

  • JavaScript (ES5 and ES6/ES2015)
  • Node.js and NPM
  • Mobile platforms (iOS - Swift, Android - Java)

All engineers in the team are responsible for testing and delivering high-quality code. As a Software Engineer in Test you will facilitate these best practices, support the team in delivering their best work, and contribute directly to these development efforts where appropriate.

Our current test technologies include but are not limited to:

  • Amazon Web Services (AWS) and its associated technologies
  • Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (eg Jenkins, AWS Codebuild) and dev ops practices
  • Cucumber (eg. Integration Testing)
  • Cypress
